Healthcare in Jaco Beach Costa Rica

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Healthcare in Costa Rica can be described in one word….world class!  OK, that’s two words, but you get the idea.  I’ve visited only two of Costa Rica’s many hospitals, Cima (pronounced see-ma) and Clinica Biblica in the center of the capital city of San Jose.  Not only are facilities and staff as professional as anything in the states, but the caring personality of the doctors, nurses and support people is in the pura vida (pure life) spirit that IS Costa Rica.  And procedures that would be thousands of dollars in the states…are hundreds here.

In Jaco Beach, we have several doctors, a couple of clinics and a host of pharmacies.  We have 24-hour emergency response teams that are the equivalent of the best paramedic teams in the states.

But let’s back up for a minute:  before you need medical attention, the general lifestyle in Costa Rica is healthier than lots of other places.  Less stress, more fresh produce, less stress, cleaner air and less stress.  Did I say “less stress”?  My “high blood pressure” condition has become normal blood pressure here in Jaco.  I believe that I’ll live longer here.  We shall see………

Visit Panaderia Artesanal!  It is easy to start your day off right in Costa Rica—especially when enjoying a cup of Costa Rican coffee and French pastry or a ham and cheese croissant for breakfast.

You’ll find a lot of regulars at the Bakery located on the north end of town, who will enjoy talking about, well– just about anything! If you don’t make it there in the morning, you can still stop by for an afternoon cup and enjoy a variety of treats as you read a good book, watch the town go by, or strike up a friendly conversation!

17 BORDER CROSSINGS at TEATRO JACO

Friday, January 6th, 2012

imageJaco Beach, Costa Rica-  January 2, 2012- Following the enormously successful “ A Christmas Carol” TEATRO JACO announces the second production of its inaugural season: 17 BORDER CROSSINGS.

This internationally acclaimed play arrives at TEATRO JACO directly from Madrid on a world tour. 17 BORDER CROSSINGS will be performed January 19 through January 29th, Thursday through Sunday at 7:30 pm at TEATRO JACO, located in OCEANS Center Jaco on Ave. Pastor Diaz in Jaco Beach. Sunday evening shows will be performed in Spanish. Ticket prices are $35.00 for Main Floor seating, $20.00 Balcony, Sunday’s Spanish language performances are specially priced at $17.50.

A seasoned world traveler and wildly inventive artist, Thaddeus Phillips embarks on new territory by stripping the stage bare to create a deceptively simple stage voyage that takes audiences to the frontiers of Tunisia, Bosnia, Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Bali, Czech Republic, Israel, Jordan, Serbia, Slovenia and Mexico. At once intelligent and hilarious, 17 Border Crossings uses physical theatricality as well as sarcasm and political critique to explore the demarcation lines created by world globalization.

imageCollected over 15 years of international travel, "17 Border Crossings" weaves together real adventures of international border crossings into a dramatic examination of imaginary lines, arbitrary passports and curious customs. It explores a world opened up by the fall of the Berlin Wall on 11/9/89, sealed off by the events of 9/11/01, and reimagined after the protest of Mohamed Bouazizi, the Tunisian fruit vendor who on December 17, 2010, said ‘enough is enough’ and thus started the revolutions that became known as the ‘Arab Spring.

THADDEUS PHILLIPS, Director, Writer and Actor is the Artistic Director of LUCIDITY SUITCASE INTERCONTINENTAL, a theater team based in Philadelphia, USA & Bogota, COLOMBIA. Lucidity Suitcase develops original theater works using creative structures, objects, found and original texts and extensive travel.

The company tours extensively to theaters across the world. Phillips trained at DAMU in Prague and with Encho Avramov and the Czech director Josef Krofta. His work has been seen OFF-BROADWAY at the BARROW STREET THEATRE and at NEW YORK THEATRE WORKSHOP, and in Seattle, Albuquerque, New Haven, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, Tampa and internationally in Spain, México, Holland, Czech Republic, Italy, Slovenia, Ireland, England, Scotland and Serbia.

Costa Rica Weather

Monday, December 12th, 2011

IMG_0089The weather in Costa Rica varies dramatically by region. Forecasts for the larger cities are not good indicators of the conditions in Jaco. At Jaco beach, daytime temperatures in the HIGH SEASON (Mid-December through April) are generally in the upper 80’s and nighttime lows are in the 70’s. In the GREEN SEASON (May through Mid-December) daytime highs are in the low 80’s and nighttime lows are in the lower 70’s. Expect rain in the green season, though it is likely to be preceded by sunshine and followed by sunshine. Rain is less likely in the high season but is not uncommon. Unlike Jaco, since San Jose is at altitude, it can get chilly in the evening – particularly in the green season.

What to Pack

CIMG8299Jaco is extremely casual – shorts, swimwear and sandals are okay everywhere. Long pants are unnecessary for Jaco but may be desired for San Jose or any special events you may have planned.

You may also want to consider clothing needed for any tours you might desire. If you plan a short trip over to Manuel Antonio Park, a jungle Canopy Tour or an ATV expedition, you’ll need sturdy tennis shoes or hiking shoes. If you plan a fishing excursion or golf at Los Suenos Resort, pack appropriately. The sun can be intense here, so remember your sunscreen, hat and sunglasses. Flip-flops or beach shoes are a good idea. All of these things can also be purchased readily in town!

New Oceans Center Theatre (Teatro Jaco) in Jaco Beach

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Charles Dickens-A Christmas Carol-Title page-First edition 1843.jpgOn December 20th 2011 the doors of the new Oceans Center Theatre (Teatro Jaco) in Jaco Beach will open to the public. In celebration of the Christmas season, the first performance held in this state of the art facility will feature the hour long musical adaptation of Dickens’ classic story, “A Christmas Carol”.

Teatro Jaco was founded by Darren Lee Cole who is co-owner of the SoHo Playhouse in New York City and also the producer of hundreds of theatrical productions worldwide. He is bringing an experienced cast from the US who will join approximately sixteen local stars in this performance promising to be full of suspense, traditional carols and fun for all ages.

“This theater is a great statement of the social health of Jaco. We are especially proud of the youth that auditioned for their parts and are putting so much into making sure the play is a success.” stated Hannah Rico Fletcher the REMAX Oceanside broker.

We give a special thanks to Patrick Hundley of Daystar Properties for building this playhouse for the community that will not only bring quality entertainment to our beautiful beach town but will also inspire the youth to broaden their horizons.

For more information go to http://www.teatrojaco.com or visit the theater which is located across from the new REMAX office right between KFC and Subway in Jaco Beach.
